SCENE: E and Rena’s Apartment
After a night filled with nightmares, E wakes up late. She quickly throws on her clothes. She lives with Rena, a very pretty blond girl in her early twenties . The blue print of a fashionable Californian girl, even though she’s from North Dakota.
The two girls live in a small two-bedroom apartment in a very old building. Over the years the white walls have turned grey. Sparsely furnished, but only because that’s all they can afford. E writes a note and sticks it on Rena’s cheek with scotch-tape, while she sleeps fully dressed on the couch.
The note says: "reminder: need the rent tomorrow."
E leaves the apartment and darts down the stairs. She runs into an old lady, slowly making her way up the stairs with carrier bags.
E: “I’m sorry.”
E continues to hurry.
The Old Lady: “It’s OK. I would have carried all my bags up faster if someone generous had helped me!”
The Old Lady smiled knowing the tricks. E stops to look at her watch. She scratches her forehead indecisively.
E: “Alright, I’ll help you.”
E comes down the stairs to the front door to find out at least ten or so heavy bags await her on the ground floor. The taxi driver, rounded and in his 40’s, pulls out even more bags from his cab.
E forces out a smile.
